Peel advocates set to host free Municipal Election Forum on October 3rd, 2022
Peel, ON – September 20th, 2022 – Peel’s upcoming municipal election is an important opportunity to push for change. A coalition of advocates and community partners are hosting a Municipal Election Forum on Monday, October 3rd, 2022 from 6:30 – 8:00pm EST to dive into issues concerning Housing, Income Supports, and Equity.
The event features three experts to share their insights on the most pressing concerns for residents in Peel. It will be a fantastic opportunity for community members to ask questions, and share ideas with advocates, candidates, and the community ahead of the election.
The event’s speakers
The first speaker is Angela Carter, the Executive Director of the Roots Community Services Inc (“RootsCS”) and advocate for the upliftment of Black, African and Caribbean people, who works tirelessly to break down systemic racism and other barriers that continue to negatively impact members of racialized and marginalized communities.
The second speaker is Douglas Kwan, Director of Advocacy and Legal Services at the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (“ACTO”). As the former Co-Executive Director at Mississauga Community Legal Services, he has extensive experience practicing housing law before various administrative tribunals and at the appellate level within our justice system.
The third speaker is Devorah Kobluk, a Senior Policy Analyst with the Income Security Advocacy Centre (“ISAC”). Devorah has previously worked in the anti-violence community and as a staffer on Parliament Hill, where she worked on policy related to income security, energy, and environment. She holds a special interest in advocacy for people with disabilities.
It’s time for action on the municipal level
Years of persistent hardship and inequities mean the status quo is not working. Municipal governments have a lot of say in creating policy that affects our day-to-day lives. Municipal councils are also best-positioned to advocate on our behalf with the province. Peel’s voice matters at Queen’s Park, and the upcoming municipal election will be instrumental in charting a better path forward so that all may thrive.
